Frequently Asked Questions

Mission, Vision and Values

Great Books are “great,” not necessarily because they are noble, but that they resonate with the human condition such that they last.  They also reflect the values of the culture, for better or worse, in which they were written.  The story of Saint George and the Dragon is the quintessential Christian epic, reflecting the virtues that we are seeking to instill in our students.  We want to raise up brave and chivalrous men, like Saint George, and wise, graceful and true women like Princess Una.

Our school motto is “Pro Christo Et Regno,” which translates to “For Christ and Kingdom.”  It is the why of everything we do, not only for the school, but for our lives.  It reminds us that our Christian walk is not only confined to Sunday, but every second of every day.

SGC is an autonomous 501c3 organization with an independent board.  Although we are not officially associated with any church or denomination, instruction will be from a Protestant (Reformed) perspective in line with the SGC Statement of Faith.

For 2025-2026, we plan on serving Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade, but we may have options for families with older children.  We want to hear from you.  Our long-term plan is to offer grades Pre-K through 12th grade, adding at least one grade per year.

Admissions

Yes.  Both parents of new and existing students must regularly attend a church that holds to the Nicene creed.  Although families do not have to agree to every element, parents must consent to their students being educated in line with the SGC Statement of Faith.

Yes. All incoming students (except Junior-K) must complete placement testing during the admissions process to ensure the academic success of the incoming student.

Students will ideally be 4 years old before the start of the school year.  Exceptions will be considered based upon birth date, maturity of the child, and of course, the wishes of the parent.

Junior-K students will need to take the Kindergarten readiness test before advancing to Kindergarten.  Existing families (including Junior-K) will always be given admissions priority.

Yes.  We require the following references:

  1. A pastoral letter that affirms that you attend church and are known by your pastor(s).
  2. A personal reference from someone who is not a relative
  3. A previous teacher (if applicable).  This can include music or sports teachers.

Yes.  Transfers will be evaluated based upon the incoming grade level, the curriculum of the previous school, and a placement test.

Tuition

SGC offers sibling, pastoral, staff discounts.  All discounts are cumulative and apply to all students within the immediate household.  In addition, we offer discounts for prepaying tuition, but this is handled at the student level.  We are not planning any needs-based financial aid at this time.

This is done in order to plan and budget adequately for the upcoming school year.

Curriculum, uniforms, application/registration fees, and any electives.

Academics

We are member schools of both the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS) and the Classical Latin School Association (CLSA).  As a young school, accreditation is not yet possible, but we are pursuing it.

We use a variety of curricula, but the largest percentage comes from Memoria Press and Veritas Press.  Rod and Staff will be used for Math in the Grammar School.

Collaborative Model

Our collaborative model allows for students to learn in a classroom setting while on campus, and then at home with a co-teaching parent for homeschool days.

  • For 2025-2026, Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade will attend classes on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays (8:30AM – 3:30PM).
  • The plan for future years is that students in 3rd grade and higher will attend classes on campus on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (8:30AM – 3:30PM)
  • The remaining weekdays are home days with lessons being conducted by the parent co-teacher. (There is no home component for Pre-K students.)

The academic load increases significantly in 3rd grade, including formal Latin and grammar, as well as distinct subjects, allowing a deeper study of the material.

Many factors will determine the amount of time it takes any individual student, but generally, you can expect something in the following range:

  • JuniorK:  None
  • Kindergarten – 2nd:  2-4 hours per day
  • 3rd – 6th grade:  4-6 hours per day
  • 7th grade & above:  6 hours per day

No formal teaching background is necessary, but because parents serve as co-teachers on at-home learning days they are expected to understand the curricula and basic teaching methods. This is particularly important in the earlier years.  Training (mandatory) for parent co-teachers takes place before each school year begins (Junior-K parents are exempt from this as preschool has no at-home component).  We are here to help and support you!

Lesson plans for at-home learning are provided weekly, enabling co-teachers to prepare effectively for homeschool days. Typically, new concepts are introduced in the classroom, with practice and reinforcement occurring at home. Occasionally, co-teachers lead lessons at home, supported by specific instructions from the classroom teacher. Co-teachers are well-supported in their role, with assistance available from both the classroom teacher and fellow co-teachers in their class.

The co-teacher’s role evolves as students grow. With younger learners, co-teachers work closely alongside their children, guiding them through the day’s lessons. As students mature, they gradually become more self-reliant on homeschool days. This progression allows co-teachers to shift from direct instructors to facilitators.  It also makes this model more scalable with multiple children.
